Zusammenfassung: This paper is concerned with certain computational aspects of estimating the mean fecundity of a single age-class of a population of fish. Four computational methods for estimating mean fecundity are compared by Monte Carlo simulation. One of the four methods is the simple expedient of estimating fecundity at sample mean length, a method known to be downwardly biased. The Monte Carlo study shows that the other three methods reduce bias and provide worthwhile efficiency gains. For small samples, the most efficient of the four methods is a “bias adjustment”, proposed here, that uses easily calculated sample statistics. For large samples, a numerical integration method has the highest efficiency. The fourth method, a “direct summation” procedure which can be done easily in many statistical or spreadsheet programs, performs well for all sample sizes.

Zusammenfassung: A classification system for whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L. s.l.) stocks was developed. The classification program is based on frequency distributions of gillrakers and length distributions in different age-groups. The system is based on time sharing, interactive use of a UNIVAC-1108 computer with a terminal.

Zusammenfassung: Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) escapements in natural streams are often determined by conducting fence counts in conjunction with mark-recapture operations. Typical field conditions are characterized by protracted floods, undetected immigration, variation in sampling rates, mortality during the census periods, small sample sizes, and few successive recaptures. Closed population models tend to overestimate escapement under such conditions, and traditional open population models cannot always be relied on due to the lack of sufficient data. A likelihood-based estimation method was specifically designed for such conditions. A distinguishing feature of this model is that individual recapture histories are not required for parameter estimation. The model is also structured to incorporate ancillary data in the estimation process to improve the precision and accuracy of the estimates. The model is described in detail, and suggestions are made to facilitate its application.
