Zusammenfassung |
The algorithm discribed shares with the gradient methods their ability to converge from an initial guess which may be outside the region of convergence of other methods. The algorithm shares with the Taylor series method the ability to close in on the converged values rapidly after the vicinity of the converged values has been reached. Thus, the method combines the best feutures of ith predecessors while avoiding their most serious limitations. |

Zusammenfassung |
Several new models are developed to estimate the velocity and diffusion of a population from tagging data. The new estimators apply the inverse principle to the individual trajectories of recovered tags rather than to their local abundance. These models require fewer assumptions and less information than do published abundance-based methods. Techniques are presented for a variety of circumstances, and both discrete and continuous parameterizations of the velocity field are included. The sensitivity of the estimators to violations of the assumptions was examined numerically by using stochastic simulations. The results suggest that the estimators are fairly robust but may fail under certain conditions. Extensions to accommodate these situations are discussed. |

Zusammenfassung |
Sea surface height may be measured by a satellite-borne altimeter and its along-track slope used to infer geostrophic currents. A major difficulty is that, in general, the local geoid and satellite orbit are not known to the accuracy desired. Thus, comparison is often made between repeat flights of an altimeter along fixed ground tracks in order to infer the changes in the currents. In practice, it is convenient to calculate a mean height profile from many repeat passes and use this as a reference, so that individual altimetric profiles yield variations about this mean. It is thus important to derive a high-quality reliable estimate of the altimetric mean in order to minimize the errors in the inferred flows for the individual repeats. This work examines various methods for deriving the mean profile. |

Zusammenfassung |
Sea scallops (Placopecten magellanicus) were sampled from each of four scallop beds: the northeast peak of Georges Bank, Western Bank, St. Pierre Bank, and the Bay of Fundy near Digby, N.S. The outlines of scallop top shells were captured by video imagery using a semiautomated approach. Fourier shape descriptors were calculated and analyzed. Age and year-class effects were shown to be important factors influencing scallop shell shape. Allometric effects on Fourier harmonics also have a significant influence on shell shape in this species. Comparisons of Fourier harmonics between scallop beds separated by age and sampling year, and corrected for allometry, revealed significant differences in the majority of harmonic numbers. |

Zusammenfassung |
Schaefer's model on the exploitation of a single species fish community obeying the logistic law of growth has been modified by adopting an alternative functional form for the harvest rate. The stability of the nontrivial steady state is discussed. The existence of a bionomic equilibrium is proved. The problem for optimal exploitation of the fishery is studied by using variational calculus. Some results are numerically computed to make a comparative study of Schaefer's model and the present one. |

Zusammenfassung |
Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) escapements in natural streams are often determined by conducting fence counts in conjunction with mark-recapture operations. Typical field conditions are characterized by protracted floods, undetected immigration, variation in sampling rates, mortality during the census periods, small sample sizes, and few successive recaptures. Closed population models tend to overestimate escapement under such conditions, and traditional open population models cannot always be relied on due to the lack of sufficient data. A likelihood-based estimation method was specifically designed for such conditions. A distinguishing feature of this model is that individual recapture histories are not required for parameter estimation. The model is also structured to incorporate ancillary data in the estimation process to improve the precision and accuracy of the estimates. The model is described in detail, and suggestions are made to facilitate its application. |

Zusammenfassung |
Often only simple relative abundance time series and basic growth and (or) survival estimates are available for assessing impacts of fishing and environmental factors. Assessment then involves fitting production models to the series, while forcing the model with observed catch or effort series. A key uncertainty in this approach is how to deal with recruitment variations due to factors other than stock size. A dynamic programming algorithm can be used to compute maximum likelihood estimates of the recruitment anomaly sequence, given prior knowledge of growth parameters, the natural survival rate, and proportion of the variation in the relative abundance index that is due to abundance measurement errors. |

Zusammenfassung |
Ócsa bog is one of the last remnants of an ancient moorland situated between the rivers Danube and Tisza in Hungary. During the years between 1984 and 1986, the food composition of five species of fish living in the ponds and channels of a former peat mine were examined: pike (Esox lucius), mud minnow (Umbra krameri), crucian carp (Carassisu carassius), catfish (Ictalurus nebulosus) and pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus). Most of the data were collected during the summer months. Overlapping food ranges of the different species were described with the Renkonen index. Much overlap was found between species Carassius carassius, Ictalurus nebulosus and Lepomis gibbosus.
